Summary of Gusto User Reviews
What Gusto does well:
According to positive reviews online, Gusto has a user-friendly interface on both its mobile and desktop versions. Others like that it syncs seamlessly with their accounting software. Some users are also pleased with the payment automation process.
What Gusto does not do well:
According to negative reviews online, Gusto’s direct deposit option takes too long and can sometimes delay the payment processing for employees. Some users complained that the pay cycle is not fully customizable, which means that you have to follow Gusto’s suggested payment cycle.
Most Helpful Positive User Review:
“I absolutely love Gusto. I have used several payroll companies over the years and this is the first one that actually gets it right the first time, saves me hours each week, and is very easy to use. The interface is very user friendly and the customer service is fantastic. It also syncs with my accounting software so my payroll is itemized and recorded automatically. It also computes and pays my workers comp each week so I don’t need to deal with that audit at the end of each year. My very favorite thing is the ability to have my new employees on-board themselves so all I do is enter their name and email address, and they do the rest.”

Most Helpful Negative User Review:
“The direct deposit portion of the software. Direct deposit processing time in insanely long. Because of the holiday this Friday, I will be required to process payroll 2 days prior to the end of the pay period to ensure it makes it into my employee’s accounts on time. This is a little absurd. Intuit was able to process payroll with next day deposits. Gusto is also not very flexible with actual pay periods. If you have a custom or unusual pay cycle, then this probably won’t work for you. The system is fairly rigid and requires you to use their lead times.”

Can I add employee benefits to the Gusto payroll service?
Yes. Gusto offers benefits and insurance add-ons such as health benefits, 401k retirement plans, workers’ compensation insurance, and 529 College Savings plans. Adding health benefits and workers’ insurance is free. The 401k retirement plan has a $500 setup fee and costs $8/participant/month and $40/month minimum. The 529 College Savings plan has no setup fee, but it costs $6/participant/month and $18/month minimum.
How does Gusto automate manual or paper-based filings?
Gusto automates the calculations, amendments, deductions, garnishments, disbursements, and calculation of taxes. They can also automatically file and pay local, state, and federal payroll taxes.
If an employee is excessively taxed on Gusto, how can this be fixed?
When the annual federal and state tax returns are filed, the IRS will determine the tax liability of your employee. In order to give your employees proper tax returns, you must input the numbers as accurately as possible to avoid any undue penalties for your employees. If this is a clerical error on Gusto’s part, you should contact them on their support page.
