Most of the tools and features available in Pixelmator are common to those already familiar with Adobe Photoshop. Editing functionalities such as layers, effects, brushes, filters, and retouching tools are present in both the iPad/iPhone version and the Mac version.
Pixelmator is made specifically for photo editing, digital painting, and graphic design in the iOS platform. Both versions can work together in a sense that you can start working on a project on your iPhone/iPad and continue working on it on your Mac.

Pixelmator has made a really simple-to-use, yet powerful tool that helps the 99% of us who are not designers work on images quickly, easily and powerfully. I’ve used previous versions of Photoshop when I worked with graphic designers, and while PS is powerful, I don’t have a need for 80% of its features. Pixelmator is a great alternative because it’s fast (unlike Gimp or other open-source tools), consistent with its UI (so you mostly know where features are located) and inexpensive.
The product can be at times a bit obtuse when doing more complicated activities, but generally, that’s very seldom.
not much, Pixelmator is transparent about its business and product, their blog is a wealth of great info and teases about new releases!

As a long-time Photoshop user on the Mac, I grew increasingly concerned that Adobe seemed to have compromised Photoshop’s overall usability in making it cross-platform. The last straw was the switch to subscription-only pricing. After trying several Photoshop alternatives, I chose Pixelmator as my primary image editing program. In a single stroke, its smart healing brush can quickly remove unwanted elements from an image. The built-in effects tools also make short work of quickly modifying the overall look and feel of a photo without a steep learning curve. But the best part is the value for money: Pixelmator gives you a LOT of capability for its purchase price, which is far less than a one-year subscription to Photoshop CC.
Many advanced users find Pixelmator’s user interface dated and confusing. In response to user feedback, the just-released Pixelmator Pro unifies these disparate elements into a modern, elegant, one-window experience that is more clearly a macOS application. Unfortunately, the Pro version of Pixelmator also creates files that can’t be opened by the non-Pro version. Not cool.
I suspected there’d eventually be a more advanced Pro version, but I didn’t expect Pixelmator Pro files would be incompatible with the non-Pro version of Pixelmator. I mean, seriously?

Pixelmator is a great app for designers of all types. They built a robust photo editing tool that is competitive with others like it at a fraction of the cost. While it isn’t as advanced as some other tools, it carries the essential tools, filters, and editing power to do most jobs. Not only does it work on Mac, it is on mobile platforms too! Do your editing on the go.
The desktop app is a little dated, working in all panels. I would love to have a unified windowed experience. The mobile app is also a bit challenging to access all the needed tools, understandably.
I wish I knew a bit more about timelines and dev goals of the application. I am unsure what the upcoming features of the application are, while that won’t prevent my use, it does make me want to use other applications if I am missing a feature.
