Hi and thanks for sharing. I guess I could better clarify the two types of PL manufacturers sellers can work with in the article.
In my experience with both private label personal care and specialty food items, there are two levels of manufacturers you can deal with:
The first, and the simplest one to start out with, is the type that manufactures products (or has them manufactured) which you can buy, label, and sell under your brand. You’re right, you can’t always walk into their facility, and many do import their lines. But they are PL in the sense you can sell their products as your own.
The other type, and the more expensive way to launch a private label brand, is using a contract manufacturer. These are the facilities you can walk into and work with to develop customized formulations or your own completely original recipes. This type of private labeling really creates your own product since the result differs from their standard formulations.
Both are private label options, but only one, the contract manufacturer, lets you customize their actual formulations to make them truly a unique product of your own. Some manufacturers do both, too, by offering a standard line along with customizable formulations.
