It’s possible your household employer isn’t aware of household tax requirements. Many aren’t, and the rules are somewhat complex. For example, do you bring your own tools, work your own hours, and control the way you go about your work? If so, the IRS might consider you self-employed, in which case your employer would provide a 1099-misc (and not take out and pay taxes on your behalf).
Here’s an IRS document called the “Household Employers Tax Guide” you can review and perhaps share with your employer to determine what your tax status should be. If your household employer needs a way to calculate and pay your taxes for you as a W-2 employee, there are free payroll software options that will help them do so. I’ve attached an article below on that as well. It’s not a bad idea to bring this information to your employer’s attention for 2018. Good luck! Laura
