What does the company do well?
The security on a Sonicwall is top notch, with an extremely robust and customizable firewall as well as various proactive features, such as advanced threat protection and always on traffic monitoring. The built-in wizards help with initial setup and various other tasks (though any advanced setup is extremely complicated). The Sonicwall support is also quite helpful, being both responsive and able to effectively help when an issue arises.
What does the company not do well?
The biggest issue I have with Sonicwall is their devices are extremely complex and difficult to use. Initial setup is greatly helped by the built-in wizards, but something as simple as setting up port forwarding for non-standard ports requires a minimum of 3 steps. Perhaps even worse is that if a mistake is made, undoing said mistake is equally as difficult, if not more so (as certain steps changes adjacent settings that are difficult to track down). In addition, the overall cost of a Sonicwall device is quite high (see below).
What about the company do you wish you had known before purchasing?
While not a big deal, SonicWall is actually owned by Dell. I did not know this prior to purchase. The various advanced threat protection features require a yearly subscription that is relatively expensive (the pricing varies from device to device). Any form of advanced support (beyond their website and forums) also requires a support subscription which is equally as expensive. Overall, a Sonicwall device falls on the more expensive end of advanced firewalls out there. It is difficult to say if the additional cost is worth it in the end, and since Sonicwall does not actively advertise the various costs, it is difficult to compare to different products.
