What does WordPress.com do well?
I have tried building websites on some of the "insta sites" like Wix. I personally think that Wordpress is the way to go to build small to large sites. With Wordpress the initial frame is very simple and you can pick any number of free themes to use. BUT the real value is in all the different themes and plugins you can choose to help run your entire business. There are plugins to do most anything you need your website to do without coding.
What does WordPress.com not do well?
The updates with Wordpress don't always coincide with the themes and/or plugins that are installed on your site. They do updates quite often - which for the most part is a good thing but when it causes an issue like completely breaking your site there can be issues. However, there are so many different plug-ins available there is no way for WordPress to have any control over this.
What do you wish you had known about WordPress.com before using?
When I first started using WordPress I got VERY overwhelmed with the number of options available. I spent hours researching all kinds of different themes and plugins. There are services out there that can help you manage your website that is on WordPress and really narrow down all the thousands of choices.
Have you used a competitor to WordPress.com? If so, how does it compare?
I have used Wix quite a bit and I believe that for a person that doesn't do websites for a living and just needs one or two for themselves it is great. However, if you want flexibility and more options at no additional price - WordPress is the best.
