How do I get listed in the local results section of Google?
I recently received the following question from a reader:
I have been in business for 14 years. I was first listed on google but in the past 2 years there is no mention of my business. I have tried the SEO companies but have just been taken for a ride and with still no placement on the keyword that I had first recommended. Let me explain, I was contacted by google because my business was no longer listed. A company sold me that they would get my business to the top of the page in my area. Sounds great, I was sold! I paid for their services up front and their job was basically over. They got me to the top of the page in the business’ borough of 1 1/2 square miles, since the business name is the towns name. It is located in Pittsburgh PA. but there was no mention of my business in the Pittsburgh PA listing.
You can understand that I am very skeptical of further sales calls with empty promises. I am also at a loss of why my business can’t have a free listing of just being mentioned when I am still in business, and business’ that have gone out of business are still listed? I can do my own search engine optimization, with Facebook and other outlets. I have also contacted my friend who has a business for 17 years and I asked how he is listed and he doesn’t know, he doesn’t pay anything but is listed.
Here is my response:
I did a quick Google search for your business and noticed that your online presence definitely needs to be improved if you want to rank organically in the local results when someone searches for your type of company in your location. Here are a few changes you can make to get started.
1. Get more Google + reviews. Right now you only have 1 review. Start sending out emails or asking customers in person if they would be willing to leave you a review on Google +. Google uses this as factor when ranking local results. Learn more about how to get online reviews with our guide.
3. Create a website. It looks like you don’t have a website, which is hurting your reputation online. Luckily, there are website builders that are super easy to use and not the expensive. Our recommended builder is Weebly, and you can learn how to set up a Weebly website with our guide.
4. Claim your Google My Business page. When I Googled your business, it looks like no one has currently claimed your page. Learn how to do this here.
