Hello Robbie,
I’m happy to help! If your tax preparer makes a mistake on your return, it’s still your responsibility to pay any applicable penalties or fines from the IRS. If you haven’t already done so, contact your tax preparer and explain to them what happened. You may also show them documentation from the IRS describing the error on your return. If the penalty or fine from the IRS is not a large amount, it may not be worth the battle with your tax preparer. It usually makes sense to pay the fine and move on. Just don’t return to that tax preparer! For larger cases, accountants and CPAs are covered by errors & omissions insurance to cover their legal expenses. I hope that helps!
