Normal wear and tear
I just left a winter rental in New Hampshire. The landlord is attempting to make me pay for the weather stripping on the bottom of the front door. I caused no damage to the property. I have move out photos as proof. Am I ignorant or doesn’t we a there stripping wear over time esp on the bottom of a door that’s the main entrance?
Hi Heather! It was a very smart move to take photos before and after tenancy that support your good standing as a renter. That will bode well for you if there is ever a court issue over further issues. So the good news and bad news is that although items that “wear” (such as front door weather stripping) would typically be thought of as normal wear and tear, there is often no firm definition that decides what “normal wear and tear” is that covers very specific areas like this one, and so they are often up to the landlord to decide. Most landlords are reasonable to see that if the property is otherwise in good condition, that wearing items of minor cost can be absorbed – but all landlords are not the same and some may press for replacement.
