I received my BS in Accounting on June 1, 2018 in NYC. I work in a preschool as the Fiscal Officer and have been in that position for 23.5 years. The board has to approve my salary increase in October at their next meeting. Question: Should my salary increase be effective June 1 when I received my credentials? What is legally acceptable? I wear two caps, one being HR as its a small non profit organization, and I would like to know what is the correct ruling according to NYS Labor Laws. Can you help with answers? Thank you.

Congratulations on receiving your degree! It’s up to a business to determine when and how to provide salary increases. Your best bet is to read your employee handbook or talk to someone within HR in your preschool. There are no labor laws that affect salary increases per se. However, it’s important that the business/non-profit abide by their own policy, and that employees be treated fairly. Therefore, if it’s always been the practice of the business to request board approval before granting salary increases, that may be the norm. In order to answer the timing question, you’ll need to find out what they’ve done in the past, and/or what they’ve documented as their process. In any case, earning a degree is such a fabulous accomplishment!
