should I upgrade to .com
Hi, I run my own small mortgage advice business which I set up in 2016. When selecting the website name, the .com option (an .co.uk) was already taken, so I chose .net instead. However, my web hosting company has just advised me that the .com site has become available but it will cost me £3.5k to purchase this. This would be quite a significant capital outlay and I am not sure I would get a return. I work mainly off referrals from existing clients so a significant web presence isn’t everything to my business. I was wondering what other thoughts who might have done something similar?
Having a .com domain name isn’t the end-all, be-all that it used to be. So paying a lot just to have it isn’t always necessary. Plus, when you say the .com has become available, does that mean it was parked and unused, but now is for sale, or that it was connected to another site previously? This can affect your choice. You can ask your hosting company to run an analysis of the .com address in SEM Rush (or whatever SERP program that they use) to determine the existing traffic value of the .com version. However, if that traffic (the visitors coming to that address from search and other links) aren’t in your company’s target audience, then that traffic is not very valuable to you. If the .com was attached to another site, but it’s no longer up, you can see it in internet historical archives (search the wayback machine for this), and determine the existing audience potential if you were to pick the .com up.
As you can see, there are many consideration to determine if this is a good expenditure. Doing this homework can help you decide if it’s worth the cost or not. Hope this helps, good luck!
