I am American but I’m considering starting a business overseas where I live. I have the name and the domain names purchased. Do you think it’s worth the money to trademark the business name at this stage? I see that it’s not taken on the uspto.gov website. Hiring US attorneys seem like an expense that I can’t afford at this time. Please advise.
You can wait on that until you know exactly which direction your business will take. You have to outline specific uses for your trademark in the application, so if you’re still working out your business’s branding and services or product line, then you should wait until you know that. Many smaller companies and startups don’t trademark names until they start creating branded products. It’s not a must-do for every startup right off the bat. I hope this helps, good luck.
