Hi Gabrielle,
I love your question. Kudos to you for setting a management goal and reaching out for suggestions. We have a few articles that can help you. I’ll attach those below. Most importantly, I believe, is don’t ever think of yourself as a manager exerting control over others — rather think of yourself as a leader, providing tools, resources, and support to help your employees succeed, on and off the job. Best of luck to you!

I agree with Laura, one of the most important is https://fitsmallbusiness.com/teamwork-tips/
But also you need to learn and understand business processes and how it’s goes.
My suggestion it to make sure those in a position to promote you know that’s your desire. Enlist them to mentor you, that’s a great way to a) learn what management is about and b) gain a supporter for when the opportunity arises. I’d also take the time to read about management. Here’s some suggestions:
1) A Message to Garcia – very short but a great message
2) 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back and read this book over the years. You can focus on a chapter at a time and be well on your way.
3) Lincoln on Leadership – biographies of great leaders provide you real lessons you can bring to your own life. What helped me to be a good manager was to instead look at myself as simply a part of the team that worked right along side of them. Be true to your word and if something is your responsibility never pass the buck. I made mistakes as a manager and the best thing I ever did was to admit them, apologize if necessary, and make any changes to ensure it didn’t happen again. Make your expectations clear and never assume anyone knows what you are thinking or want. Stand up for your staff and do the right things for them and for the company. Expect the best from them and find their individual strengths and work on those more than the weaknesses. Always look to be better at what you are doing – read, study, talk to your team and get real feedback. They want a leader not a boss.
A good Manager is someone who can stand with the team through thick and thin, and should never try to impose his opinion on everyone. He should possess leadership quality along with team-building activities. He should be a good spectator and should be able to balance both worlds with his colleagues & Clients
Think about improving certain skills that will help you get the role and improve the organization’s culture (empathy, active listening, etc). Nevertheless, to effectively bridge the gap and create competence, you need to develop self-awareness. It is skill number 1 that can help you to better identify your present talents as well as the skills you need to grow and expand.
In any large organization, there is a management hierarchy that keeps the entire operation smooth. A good manager acts as a facilitator while mixing with the environment and adjusting small things here and there to achieve a great effect. Being a good manager has to do with leading calmly and being an example. It is one of the most difficult jobs that exists, partly because you have to handle egos and expectations. And he is also one of the least recognized. Despite this, there are several tricks of the trade that will help you successfully manage all your responsibility, with style and drive.
Becoming a manager can be both challenging and rewarding. Here’s what to consider if you’re considering this role. Some tips might be helpful for anyone who want to be a manager. These are as follows:
1.Identify your department’s goals, and determine the resources needed to achieve them.
2.Get to know each individual’s needs, and find out what drives them.
3.Observe each direct report’s behavior to determine if there is sufficient knowledge, skill and motivation for the individual to complete the task.
4.Delegate tasks and responsibilities to meet the department’s objectives.
5.Set clear expectations, understood by both you and your staff.
6.Coach the individual for improved performance and his own professional development.
7.Prepare for the unexpected.Directing a company successfully in these times requires much more than a curriculum full of degrees and work experience. The current world requires innovative, passionate, flexible and visionary managers. Whether as a manager of your own company or someone else’s company, it is important that you possess or develop a series of essential qualities for the current business environment. What are those qualities?
Adaptability, knowledge, emotional intelligence, executive intelligence, human skills, negotiation skills, leadership, ability to inspire and motivate, knows how to delegate, is visionary, innovative and passionate.
This question brings to mind some advise that was given to me quite a while ago which is, “do more than what you are paid for and eventually you will get paid more for what you do”. This may be simple or more challenging depending on your current responsibilities but it is something to strive for. Try to learn as many positions in the company as you can without neglecting your current workload. Also, maybe more importantly is to see yourself already in the position. Kind of reverting to the “law of attraction”. It has worked for me even before I knew what it was. The last suggestion would be to just keep learning, mostly about people. I believe human phycology is every bit as important as knowing everything there is to know about your job and what it entails. I’m not saying to go out and get a master’s in phycology, but I would certainly study the subject. I hope this helps, and best luck to ya.
