What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a manager?
I am currently in an entry level/mid level position and I want to advance to a management position in the next 1-2 years. I think I am really good with working and delegating to others.13 Replies

Most importantly, I believe, is don’t ever think of yourself as a manager exerting control over others — rather think of yourself as a leader, providing tools, resources, and support to help your employees succeed, on and off the job. My suggestion it to make sure those in a position to promote you know that’s your desire. Enlist them to mentor you, that’s a great way to a) learn what management is about and b) gain a supporter for when the opportunity arises. I’d also take the time to read about management. Here’s some suggestions:
1) A Message to Garcia – very short but a great message
2) 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back and read this book over the years. You can focus on a chapter at a time and be well on your way.
3) Lincoln on Leadership – biographies of great leaders provide you real lessons you can bring to your own life.13 Replies

What helped me to be a good manager was to instead look at myself as simply a part of the team that worked right along side of them. Be true to your word and if something is your responsibility never pass the buck. I made mistakes as a manager and the best thing I ever did was to admit them, apologize if necessary, and make any changes to ensure it didn’t happen again. Make your expectations clear and never assume anyone knows what you are thinking or want. Stand up for your staff and do the right things for them and for the company. Expect the best from them and find their individual strengths and work on those more than the weaknesses. Always look to be better at what you are doing – read, study, talk to your team and get real feedback. They want a leader not a boss.13 Replies

Lead by example. Learn as much as you can about the various positions and tasks you will be overseeing. Delegate when you are not the best person for a particular job. The best managers know how to motivate and relate to their co-workers.13 Replies
