What are some tips for starting a blog?
My goal in 2019 is to start a cooking/food related blog. What are your best tips for finding your audience, keeping them engaged, deciding what type of content to put out etc….I’m completely new to blogging!

Before you start writing for a blog, you must understand your blog content focus. Cooking/food related is a good start, but focus means having a focus and not g=being general. It is difficult to all things to all people. Desserts, Balanced meals, Main course, Keto Diet, etc. First choose your niche. As you get comments you can expand to other specialties.
Second point and more important is knowing the audience you are writing for. Who do you want reading your blog? Male or female; single or partnered; with kids; etc. Understanding this reader persona will inform you about how you write and what you emphasize. Again it is best to start with a niche and then grow into other niches as the readership grows.

As David said, it’s important to define what makes your food blog different. Have you ever watched Food Network? All of the shows are about cooking, but they’re all a different angle. Your blog should have a unique angle that attracts a certain type of audience. Maybe you write about “Family Style Meals on A Budget” or you feature finger style food recipes.
As far as keeping them engaged, the most important key is to regularly produce relevant content. Be consistent. Make it a goal to publish 2-3X’s a week in order to begin to generate a regular audience. To do that, create a content calendar using a tool like Asana, Airtable, or Trello, that lets you plan out your posts and keep them on a schedule.
Also, block out your time so that if you’re writing, write 2 or 3 posts, instead of trying to sit down and write and publish the same day. If you can, write 2 weeks of posts, give yourself time to edit, and then schedule them in advance. Nothing kills a blog like inconsistent posting.

I highly recommend getting together a content calendar, and starting to put all of your ideas for blog posts onto paper. This way, you can start assigning dates to each and get a better of idea of what you will need to do to prepare the week before whether that is taking photos, getting ingredients, or even doing test recipes. As said above, make an effort to post at least 2-3x a week, but when getting started be sure to focus on at least 1 a week, even if you need to batch the posts and schedule one for this week and one for next.
Another suggestion is to really find your niche. Know exactly who you’re talking to in your posts. What age are they? Do they eat healthy already? Are they already experienced in the kitchen? Once you get all of this down you will be able to create content easier and more efficiently!

You’ve already received some great advice, but I’ll add one more tip. Before you even begin to start writing a post, consider what you want people to do when they finish reading it. Leave a comment? Subscribe? Buy a product? Then make sure your post effectively leads them to doing that, and include a strong call to action.

I would agree with all of the above with one exception. Stop trying to “find your niche”. Though I know it sounds counter-productive, it’s really not. Your niche should be obvious.
I have been a business consultant for over 26 years. I own 13 companies. I LOVE to cook.
It’s funny that my staff begs me to cook for them so we have staff meals fairly often. The thing is…I know what I’m good at making. I can smoke meat like nobody’s business. I’m really good with southern food. Not so much the “froo froo”. I can do it, I just really don’t like to.
You mentioned that you want to do a cooking/food related blog, but the real question is what do YOU love to cook? What are you really good at? That’s the best way to find your niche.
Once you do that, then figure out what you want them to get out of it.

What are some tips for starting a blog?
1. Pick a niche that you’re knowledgeable about and interests you. I had no luck generating interest in my blog before I chose a niche. On the contrary, my topic-diverse blog was called “bipolar.”
2. Make sure there is a market for your content. For example, since I’m a Medieval Times history teacher, I was initially interested in connecting events of the Middle Ages to the politics of today. My niche may have been too specific. I could find an audience. Now I blog about blogging. There are so many blogs, I’ve been able to generate traction.
3. Pick a content management system (CMS). Where will you publish your blog? I recommend WordPress.org. I’m still affected by being at WordPress.com for nine months.
4. If you start at a dotorg site, you need to pick a host. Do your research and choose a host that’s right for you. How much memory (bandwidth) will your budget allow??
5. You will need to choose a theme and learn to use it.
6. Start churning out content. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be finished.
7. Promote everywhere and see where your content resonates.
8. Learn SEO. Your content will wither on the proverbial shelf. After initial interest, that will be that. If you optimize for search engines, people could be coming to your site for years and reading your posts.
Those are 8 tips off the top of my head.
As you see, there is a great deal to consider when starting a blog.
