What happens to your sick days if go unused after 10 years employed full time?

I have been working for a company for over 10 years now and i have never taken a sick day. What happens to your sick days if they go unused?

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for posting your question. In most US states, sick leave is a voluntary benefit that employers provide. Some allow you to roll over sick leave and others have a use-it-or lose it policy. You’ll need to ask your employer exactly how sick leave is accrued at your company and whether unused sick leave can be rolled over from year to year. If so, ask them how much can be rolled over (most have a cap on the number of hours you can save up).

Also, many states require that your sick leave balance (what’s available) is printed on your paystub. Here are a few articles you may want to share with your employer if they haven’t provided this information. Otherwise, your company HR rep is in the best position to answer this question for you. Unless sick leave is mandated in your state, it’s up to each employer to determine the policy and rules.

Every company varies, but typically sick or personal days do not carry over to the next calendar year.
