Why ask me for my name at sign-up, and then not call me by it?

So this started with a sign-up screen in which I was asked for my first name. I entered “Mary Ellen”. I got my free guide, but it came in a message headed “Hey Mary”. WHy would you ask me my name, and then call me something else?
