Just received the below question from a reader that I thought I would share with the community:
I just read your article about CRMs (Insightly, Nimble, or Zoho) for small businesses and had some questions. First of all, I think my current situation is considered entrepreneurial rather than a small business since I am an independent consultant (I did establish an LLC). However, my primary service is lead generation for small to mid size businesses. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to manage both my own internal leads as well as my clients leads so I am interested in implementing a simple CRM.
A little about me: I’ve worked for companies that custom built CRMs in-house, a tech startup that used Salesforce, a small business had Nimble but then transferred over to PipelineDeals when I joined. So I am no stranger to the world of CRMs.
My question is, as an independent consultant, what CRM would you recommend for lead generation services? I really like what Zoho offers but don’t want to invest if it’s not necessary.

As far as simplicity goes Insightly is hard to be. What you give up for that simplicity however is the ability to customize the CRM, advanced reporting, and lot’s of integrations with third party technologies.
With the above in mind I would say that if you and your team are the ones that are going to be using the CRM, I would go with Zoho. You are getting a lot more functionality and if you have used salesforce you shouldn’t have any issues with the added complexity.
If you are going to be giving the CRM out to your clients, and they just need basic task management and opportunity reporting, then I would go with Insightly. The lower cost and simplicity are going to save you money and headaches when getting them up and running on the new system.
