My suggestion it to make sure those in a position to promote you know that’s your desire. Enlist them to mentor you, that’s a great way to a) learn what management is about and b) gain a supporter for when the opportunity arises. I’d also take the time to read about management. Here’s some suggestions:
1) A Message to Garcia – very short but a great message
2) 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone back and read this book over the years. You can focus on a chapter at a time and be well on your way.
3) Lincoln on Leadership – biographies of great leaders provide you real lessons you can bring to your own life.
