Pull up a chair. Let's talk business. |
🕔 What if one hour this business week could make a bigger difference than the other 39?
As small business owners, we're surrounded by busy work that demands our attention. Emails stack, customers need answers, invoices have to be paid, and unexpected problems always seem to pop up. We can work nonstop all day and still feel like we didn't accomplish anything that actually moved our business forward.
These tasks are important. They keep our businesses running, keep the customers happy, and keep the lights on. But these are just parts of owning a business. There's a big difference between running a business and growing a business.
Growth is what creates new opportunities. It's what brings in new customers, increases revenue, improves profitability, and gives you more choices for the future. Without it, we're simply maintaining what we've already built. The challenge is that growth planning rarely feels urgent.
Nobody is asking whether you've finished your growth plan. Nobody is wondering about that big idea that’s been living in your head for months. Nobody is checking to see if you've started the project you’ve been putting off. At the end of the day, you’re the only one holding yourself accountable for those things. Fortunately, growth doesn't require perfection. It simply requires intention. |
Here are three ways to make growth a priority this week |
- Block one hour on your calendar. Treat it like a meeting with your most important client. Don't cancel it. Use that time to do something intentional to move the needle.
-
Choose one growth project. Focus on one task that will benefit your business six months from now, not just today.
- Hold yourself accountable. Emails, phone calls, and other urgent tasks will always be there. Give yourself permission to spend dedicated, uninterrupted time working on your future business.

Sometimes your biggest obstacle isn't outside your business... it’s inside your own mind! Is success holding you back?
Everyone talks about the fear of failure. It's why some people never start a business, launch a new product, or take a chance on themselves. The fear of failing is such a powerful emotion; it can keep us frozen in time indefinitely if we let it. Analysis paralysis is a real thing. For me, fear of failure wasn't my biggest enemy; it was quite the opposite. Honestly, it was quite shocking when I figured it out. I kept trying to diagnose why I felt stuck when I opened my marketing business, and then it hit me. I was terrified of SUCCEEDING! I would ask myself, "What if this doesn't work?" assuming that was my fear. But then I realized the question that scared me more was “What if it does?”
Success meant giving up control. Success meant giving up more of my time, more of my freedom. I worried about what success would actually look like. What if I got so busy I couldn't keep up? What if I had to hire someone before I was financially ready? What if I took on more clients than I could realistically serve? What if there aren’t enough hours in the day? Looking back, I can see those fears influenced my decisions more than I realized. I wasn't marketing my own business the way I should have been. It's ironic that a marketing company was falling behind on its own marketing, but fear has a way of convincing us we're being practical when we're really just standing still. |
The funny thing about success is that it usually asks something new of us. It asks us to trust ourselves before we feel completely ready. It asks us to let go of a little control, make decisions that are bigger than us, and believe we'll figure things out along the way.
We work hard to build something successful, but when success starts knocking, we hesitate because we can already see all the responsibility waiting on the other side of the door. If you’ve ever experienced these feelings, just know you’re not alone. This week, ask yourself one simple question: Where might I be getting in my own way?
The answer might surprise you. Sometimes the biggest thing standing between us and the business we've been dreaming about isn't the fear of failure. It's the fear that we might actually succeed. |

Insider Tip:
The latest MetLife & U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index found that 70% of small businesses say rising prices have significantly impacted their operations, yet 65% still expect their revenue to grow over the next year. In other words, successful business owners aren't waiting until every challenge disappears. They're finding ways to move forward despite the uncertainty.
This week, think about one decision you've been putting off. Are you waiting because the timing truly isn't right, or because you're afraid of what comes next if it works? Sometimes the biggest step toward growth is recognizing when fear has been quietly making the decisions for you. |

One idea to try this week |
Create a QR code that links directly to your Google Business Profile and add it to your invoices, receipts, or thank-you cards with a simple message: "Enjoyed working with us? We'd love your review!" It's a small addition that can help you collect more customer reviews with almost no extra effort. |

As business owners, we're good at looking ahead. There's always something we'd like to improve, whether it's attracting more customers, increasing profits, creating a better work-life balance, or finally launching that idea that's been sitting on the back burner.
The interesting thing is that our answers often reveal what matters most to us. For one business owner, success might mean doubling revenue. For another, it might mean taking weekends off without worrying about work. Neither answer is right or wrong because every business and every owner is different.
Sometimes we're so focused on checking off today's to-do list that we forget to step back and ask ourselves where we're actually trying to go. Taking a few minutes to think about the bigger picture can help us make better decisions today. So this week's question is simple: If you could change one thing about your business over the next year, what would it be? |
