OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads on Sept. 16 with HubSpot integration and a Shopify app for US merchants, AI-assisted campaign tools, and testing of Sponsored Agents. The Shopify app is scheduled to expand to other markets where ChatGPT Ads is available on Sept. 23.
One important number is still missing. OpenAI says the platform does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types. There is no authoritative average CPC, CTR, or ROAS that tells a small business whether its campaign is performing well.
A more useful benchmark is whether ChatGPT Ads can bring in qualified leads or customers at a cost the business can afford.
Who can see ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT ads may appear to eligible users on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are ad-free, and OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it identifies as belonging to people under 18.
ChatGPT Ads also differs from conventional keyword advertising. Advertisers can provide context hints describing their offering and relevant customer situations, while OpenAI uses conversational intent and other relevance signals to determine when ads are eligible to appear.
A small test can show whether ChatGPT traffic converts as well as traffic from your existing channels.
Why ChatGPT Ads benchmarks are still limited
ChatGPT Ads uses a relevance-weighted, second-price auction rather than conventional keyword matching. For CPC campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.
That is bidding guidance, not an average CPC. A higher cost per click can still work if those visitors become profitable customers, while inexpensive traffic that never converts can waste money.
Set your CAC ceiling first
Before launching a campaign, decide what you can afford to spend to acquire a customer. That planning ceiling is different from actual customer acquisition cost, which measures acquisition spending against the number of customers acquired.
Consider an ecommerce business with an $80 average order and a 40% gross margin. Each order generates $32 in gross profit. If the business is willing to devote half of that profit to acquisition, its target CAC ceiling would be $16.
A service business can work backward from lead value. If its target CAC is $360 and 25% of qualified leads become customers, the corresponding cost-per-qualified-lead ceiling is $90.
Track the right ChatGPT Ads metrics
Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions. Advertisers can also send conversion events through the OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, or both for purchases, leads, registrations, and other supported actions.
CTR and CPC measure traffic efficiency; conversion rate and CAC show whether that traffic produces enough business value.
Ads Manager supports 7-, 14-, or 30-day click-through attribution windows and an optional one-day view-through window. Recent conversions can take 24 to 48 hours to appear, so same-day results may be incomplete.
UTM parameters can provide another check by separating paid ChatGPT visits from other referral traffic in your analytics platform.
Budget for a meaningful test
The standard US minimum daily campaign budget is $25, but OpenAI treats that amount as an average over seven days. Daily spend can reach twice the selected budget on an individual day, while total spend over the applicable seven-day period cannot exceed seven times the daily amount.
For businesses that need a firmer overall spending limit, OpenAI also offers campaign-total budgets. Those cap the amount available across the campaign rather than pacing against a daily average.
ChatGPT Ads measurement checklist
Before launching:
- Define a purchase, qualified lead, or other meaningful conversion.
- Set a target CAC or cost-per-lead ceiling.
- Add UTM parameters to landing-page URLs.
- Set up conversion tracking and verify it against your analytics or CRM.
- Compare qualified conversion rates and CAC with existing acquisition channels.
When to test — or wait
ChatGPT Ads is worth testing when you can track meaningful conversions, know what a customer is worth, and have enough budget to generate a useful sample.
Continue when qualified CAC stays within your target and customer quality holds up against other channels. Adjust the campaign when traffic arrives but qualified conversions lag. Pause when acquisition costs remain above your ceiling after enough conversions have accumulated to make the result meaningful.
Until broader benchmarks exist, judge ChatGPT Ads against your own acquisition costs, conversion quality, and margins. A campaign works when it acquires customers at a cost your business can sustain.
