Google's expanded AI-search reporting is now available worldwide, giving small businesses another reason to check their existing analytics before subscribing to AI visibility software. The August 31 rollout lets website owners see how often their pages appear in supported generative AI search features.
The new Search Console reports cover impressions in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. Microsoft also expanded Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report in June, adding citation-share and topic insights in global preview.
Neither provides a complete picture of recommendations across AI assistants. For businesses weighing another marketing subscription, however, the new data offers a useful starting point.
Why AI recommendations can change
AI-generated recommendations vary by question, location, platform, and available information. Appearing in one answer doesn't mean a business will consistently appear in similar searches.
Google's AI search guidance says pages must be indexed and eligible for search snippets to appear as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. No special AI-specific markup is required, and meeting those conditions doesn't guarantee inclusion.
An accounting firm might appear in a general recommendation but not when a customer asks for a specialist serving restaurants. Several tests are more informative than one favorable result.
Which businesses should pay attention?
Local service providers, retailers, consultants, and other businesses that rely on customer recommendations have good reason to examine their AI presence. Companies with established referral networks or longer sales cycles may place less importance on individual AI mentions.
The priority depends on how customers find the business and whether improved monitoring could influence marketing decisions.
Three checks before buying AI visibility software
1. Verify your business information
Review your website, Google Business Profile, major directories, and review platforms. Correcting outdated information helps customers and supports broader AI search visibility efforts.
Check the essentials:
- Consistent business names, addresses, and contact information
- Accurate hours, service areas, and descriptions
- Current reviews and duplicate listings
- Clear website pages explaining products or services
Also check whether important website pages are indexed and accessible to search engines. Accurate listings and accessible content are useful foundations, although neither guarantees AI citations.
2. Test the recommendations customers might see
Try five to 10 realistic customer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity as an informal starting point. Include relevant locations, services, and buying needs.
Record the exact question, platform, date, competitors mentioned, and any factual errors. Repeat the tests periodically using consistent wording to identify patterns.
Compare your observations with Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Their reports cover specific AI experiences, not every brand mention. A citation also doesn't establish that someone visited your website or contacted your business.
3. Check whether AI referrals generate leads
Google Analytics 4 introduced a dedicated AI Assistant traffic channel in May 2026. It identifies visits from recognized assistants, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, when suitable referral information is available.
The channel doesn't capture every AI-influenced customer. Traffic from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode falls under Organic Search, while visits without identifiable referral information may be attributed elsewhere.
Compare tracked AI referrals with calls, appointment bookings, and form submissions. Asking customers how they found you can reveal additional leads, though their answers may be incomplete.
When paid monitoring makes sense
Paid tools may justify their cost when a business needs automated testing, broader platform coverage, competitor monitoring, or reporting across several locations.
Before subscribing, identify what's missing from existing analytics and estimate the staff time needed to collect that information manually. Businesses ready to compare providers can review our guide to AEO software.
The strongest reason to buy isn't a higher visibility score. It's reliable information that helps a business make better marketing decisions than it could with the tools it already has.
