It is difficult to compare ADP vs Paylocity in terms of pricing because both offer custom-priced plans. The monthly fees also vary, depending on the features you want. ADP even has a different pricing scheme for its small business payroll solution, ADP Run, where it charges fees for every pay run.

For the purpose of establishing which option is reasonably priced for small businesses, we compared the two providers on pricing for 10 employees.

  • Paylocity: We received a quote of $9 per employee plus a $200 base fee monthly. This package includes hiring, onboarding, new hire reporting, PTO and time tracking, payroll, wage garnishments, learning management, performance reviews, and employee self-service tools. There’s also a $700 fee for system setup and implementation. After setup, Paylocity will charge you $290 for 10 employees in one month.
  • ADP: For its basic ADP Run plan, we received a quote of $2.50 per employee, per weekly pay run plus a $49 base fee monthly. The solutions included are primarily for processing payroll (plus wage garnishments), with basic HR solutions for onboarding, background checks, new hire reporting, and employee self-service. There’s also a $200 setup fee, but the rep waived this in our quote. After setup, ADP will charge you $149 for 10 employees in one month.

Based on the above computation, ADP appears to be more affordable than Paylocity. The provider even has a lower setup fee ($200 vs $700), and offers special promotions (like three months of free payroll) for new clients from time to time. This is great for businesses that want to save on setup and payroll costs. You can expect to save more if you only pay employees once or twice a month.

However, while ADP (specifically its ADP Run product) may seem less expensive, Paylocity’s package comes with more HR solutions, such as hiring, time tracking, performance reviews, and learning management—functionalities that are either paid add-ons or included in the higher tiers of ADP Run. If your business needs these HR features, subscribing to a Paylocity plan makes more sense because you may end up paying the same (if not higher) monthly fee with ADP. Plus, you can easily add other HR solutions (like global payroll) to your Paylocity plan without getting a different product plan (with ADP, you have to choose from three international payroll products).

ADP may have similar payroll compliance features with pay error alerts, but Paylocity takes it a step further with its 30 automatic payroll audits. An example is its tax geolocation audit, which looks at the employees’ tax calculations based on their work location. This ensures that you’re deducting and paying the correct payroll taxes.

In addition, Paylocity’s built-in expense tracking tool makes it easy to submit, approve, and process employee reimbursements for business expenses. ADP may also process employee reimbursements, but the approved transactions come from a partner expense management solution.

If you want to offer standard and non-standard benefits, ADP provides access to health, retirement, and workers’ compensation plans, including employee discounts with partner retail shops. Plus, its platform isn’t as glitchy—with Paylocity, you sometimes have to refresh the system or go back to the previous page in order for the current page to load. While ADP may not assign dedicated account managers to all of its clients, you can easily contact its 24/7 support team either through phone, chat, or email.

While it may be a bit difficult to navigate through all of Paylocity’s features (because it has a lot of HR and payroll solutions), it has robust how-to materials for new users. Aside from an online knowledge base, it offers webinars and has a library of videos that tackle Paylocity’s different functionalities.
