Unless your voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) provider offers unlimited international calling, calling out-of-country can make your phone bill unpredictable and expensive. The best phone systems offer plans with unlimited VoIP international calls and features to support your business globally, like international numbers and call forwarding. We compared various providers offering cheap or free international VoIP calling to find the best options for small businesses.

Based on feature set, ease of use, cost, and overall value, here are the best providers for international VoIP calling:

  • 8×8: Best overall and best for companies wanting free VoIP international calls and high-capacity video conferencing tools
  • Phone.com: Best service for small businesses needing cheap international phone numbers and metered and unlimited international calling minutes
  • RingCentral MVP: Best for mid-size and large teams looking for international phone numbers and features to support a global workforce
  • Nextiva: Best for medium-sized organizations with a U.S.-based workforce wanting metered international calling, toll-free minutes, and professional greetings

8×8: Best Overall Provider for Free VoIP International Calls

  • Business numbers available in more than 120 regions

What's Missing

  • Fewer languages are available on the interactive voice response (IVR) system compared to RingCentral
  • Doesn’t offer as many integrations as other services
  • X series plans cost more than other VoIP providers offering similar features

8x8 Pricing*

  • 8×8 Express: $15 per user, per month for up to 10 users with unlimited domestic calling, an auto-attendant, file sharing, visual voicemail, meeting recording and transcription, and 100 video meeting attendees

International calling costs can add up quickly with per-minute rates offered by most providers. However, 8×8 X series plans include unlimited calling to 14 or 48 countries, depending on the subscription tier. If you purchase a global direct inward dial (DID) number with X2 or X4 plans, your remote agents can make unlimited calls within their country as well as unmetered international calls to 14 or 48 countries.

Contact center subscriptions (X6, X7, and X8) provide 4,000 total inbound and outbound call minutes per user, per month and allow unlimited international VoIP calls to 48 countries. Although this is less than the 52 regions supported with GoTo Connect, 8×8 is the only service with unmetered international calling and global workforce support.

Additionally, 8×8 performs very well for businesses in need of international numbers. This is a service neither GoTo Connect nor Ooma, which both have more unlimited international calling options than 8×8, offer.

If your outbound call volume doesn’t warrant an unlimited international calling subscription, consider RingCentral MVP. Its multi-lingual interactive voice response (IVR) supports 16 languages compared to 8×8’s nine and offers international standard and toll-free numbers in more than 100 global locations. Check out our guide to learn how RingCentral and 8×8 compare.

8×8 Features

  • Unmetered VoIP international calls: All subscriptions allow unlimited calling to U.S. and Canadian numbers. But you can select X series plans for unmetered calls to 14 or 48 countries, including the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, and Australia.
  • International phone numbers: 8×8 provides public branch exchange (PBX) services in over 40 countries, similar to RingCentral. Likewise, you can buy international numbers (standard and toll-free) in 121 locations compared to about 100 with RingCentral. Both services let you forward calls to international employees.
  • Video conferencing: 8×8 supports the highest number of video meeting participants—500 versus 250 with Nextiva. It also provides about 60 international dial-in conference numbers, whereas Phone.com supplies 11, and Ooma doesn’t have any. Explore more features in our 8×8 review.

In comparison, unlimited calling to Israel starts at $57 per user, per month with 8×8 and $29 with GoTo Connect.

Check out Nextiva

*Pricing is based on one to four users with a monthly payment. Annual prepayment and volume-based discounts reduce per-user costs.

Nextiva offers U.S.-based and some Canadian phone numbers (like Ontario and Quebec), and unlimited calling includes calls to Canada. Nextiva’s subscriptions also come with the most toll-free minutes, ranging from 1,500 to 12,500. In contrast, RingCentral MVP provides 100 to 10,000 and GoTo Connect offers 1,000 to 5,000.

In addition, Nextiva is the only service for VoIP international calling that gives one to three complimentary greetings for your virtual receptionist menu or voicemail boxes. Nextiva is suitable for U.S.-based teams that make occasional international VoIP calls but don’t need global phone numbers.

In some cases, Nextiva supplies cheaper international rates. For instance, Nextiva’s U.K. rates start at 1 cent per minute versus 3.9 cents with RingCentral MVP and 3.47 cents with 8×8. Discover more features and pricing details in our Nextiva review.

Nextiva Features

Nextiva Enable VoIP international calling.

Enable VoIP international calling for your staff.
(Source: Nextiva)

  • VoIP international calls: Nextiva gives you the option of enabling international calling by location or individual user. It offers competitive rates, suitable for U.S.-based organizations with low volumes of outbound international calls.
  • Professional greetings: Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate subscriptions include one to three greetings. Submit your script, and a voice artist will record your greeting. Nextiva uploads them directly to your Nextiva account, making it easy to establish a professional presence from the beginning.
  • Unified communications: Nextiva puts multiple channels on one platform, so your team doesn’t need to switch apps to check text messages, send a fax, or chat with co-workers. Check out Ooma

*Ooma Premier, Ooma World, and Ooma World Plus are add-on international calling plans.

Ooma is the only phone service with add-on plans for unlimited VoIP international calls to landlines in 60 or 70 regions. It’s unique because it offers a free residential package used by solopreneurs with home offices. There’s a one-time fee for the Telo equipment, which costs around $99 on average, but it is then free to call anywhere in the U.S.

Upgrade to the Premier package for unlimited calling to Canada and Mexico. You can also add a VoIP international calling plan for unmetered calls to landlines in 60 or 70 regions. This allows you to make free calls to 60 countries for less than you’ll pay to access fewer countries with GoTo Connect, 8×8, or RingCentral MVP. However, these providers support calling to mobile devices, whereas Ooma doesn’t.

Ooma also offers paid business plans with an auto-attendant, call flip, and video conferencing. These advanced features make Ooma a top pick for small business VoIP services.

Ooma Features

(Source: Ooma)

  • International calling plans: Ooma’s international add-on plans cover the highest number of locations (60 to 70) compared to 52 with GoTo Connect and 14 or 48 with 8×8. It costs $17.99 per month for 60 regions or $25.99 for 70 countries.
  • Home office support: Make and receive calls from your desktop or mobile devices. Or make hands-free calls using Amazon Alexa. Call a specific number or contact or check your voicemail without picking up a device.
  • Scalability: Ooma recently added an Enterprise Call Center plan with advanced call routing features and a call flow editor. You can scale your phone services from a free home office plan to contact center software with this addition. Explore more plan details in our Ooma review.

GoTo Connect: Best for U.S. Employees Needing Unlimited Global Minutes

GoTo Connect provides unlimited VoIP international calling to 52 countries, whereas 8×8 supports 48, and Phone.com includes eight. It differs from these providers because GoTo Connect subscriptions include toll-free minutes. GoTo Connect is also cheaper than 8×8. You’ll pay $44 per user, per month with an annual prepayment for 8×8. GoTo Connect costs $20 to $35 per person, per month, based on the number of users.

GoTo Connect also offers PBX services in seven countries, including the U.K., Ireland, and Germany, and the mobile app supports several languages such as English, Spanish, and German. However, if your agents reside outside these locations, 8×8 or RingCentral MVP is a better option. Check out user ratings and additional features in our GoTo Connect review.

GoTo Connect Features
